This has been a crazy year so far. Almost everything normal has been stripped away, leaving this strange coronavirus life. Are you done with it yet?
There are so many unknowns in our life right now. The future is shaky and uncertain, the present confusing and often chaotic.
It’s hard to find rest for our soul in this season. The things we would normally look to for comfort have been stripped away. But even in the chaos, we can find rest.
THIS WORLD IS EVER CHANGING
As I was reading Hebrews a few mornings ago, these verses stuck out to me.
And, “You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning,
Hebrews 1:10-12 (ESV)
and the heavens are the work of your hands;
they will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment,
like a robe you will roll them up,
like a garment they will be changed
But you are the same,
and your years will have no end.”
This year definitely sounds like what the verse described. Everything is changed and worn out “like a garment.” But this verse implies that our world is always like that. It doesn’t specify that only in 2020 is the world wearing out and perishing. The craziness of this season has simply made it more apparent.
COVID-19 has revealed the fragility of our lives that’s always been there. This world is passing away. It’s not our home. If we make our schedules, plans, or anything of this world the foundation of our lives, we will be destroyed when storms like COVID-19 come.
Nothing lasts forever. Friendships, great days, incredible seasons all come to an end. 2020 or not, this world is ever changing, and if we put our hope in it than we will not have rest in the chaos.
LOOK TO HIM FOR REST
Unlike the world around us, God never changes. When you are craving normality and something consistent, look to Christ, who is unchanging.
For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.
Malachi 3:6 (ESV)
Not only that, but he created this world. As the verse says, the Lord laid the foundation of the earth at its beginning. He is powerful, deserving of awe, and completely in control of this situation.
We don’t have to be consumed by the trials of our world. Take your eyes off this crumbling world and look to Jesus, our firm, unchanging foundation. Surrender to him your fear and anxiety in this season. Trust that COVID-19 does not surprise him, and it is not outside of his control.
When the world is in chaos around us, look to Jesus for rest.
